![]() ![]() Harry jumps, scrambling for his mobile, but Draco barely registers what’s happening because the creature turns to them and it’s like being struck with lightning when their gazes meet. “Harry, wait, don’t take the cover off its eyes!” Shanvika yells, clearly audible over the phone right as the blindfold drops. They see each other during pub nights, now that their friend groups have blended together, but Draco never really finds themself alone with Harry in all his charming glory. Draco just stands off to the side, feeling strange and unhelpful and flustered at Harry being here in the record shop. Here, baby, you’re okay.” He places his phone on the floor and reaches out for the creature, slipping back into Parseltongue easily. “She’s scared,” Harry says quietly, stealing a quick glance at Draco before focusing on the creature again. The sound seems to calm the creature immediately– it freezes, then cocks its head, and when Harry falls silent it makes a tiny, rough sound without opening its mouth. ![]() “Harry,” Draco starts, but then they go stiff as Harry kneels down and starts hissing at the creature, scratchy sounds that send Draco’s thoughts skittering until they remember that Harry can speak Parseltongue. ![]() Over the phone, Shanvika keeps rambling, but Harry drops his hand by his side and ignores the sound. Harry is already moving calmly towards where the creature is scrambling up a toppled stack of records. “What?” Draco asks, wrapping their arms around the bare stretch of skin under their crop top. “No, she hasn’t made any sound– oh! Hold on, I’ve got an idea,” Harry exclaims, startling Draco. Just horns, and a blindfold over her eyes that she clearly didn’t put there.” Harry falls silent for a moment, his eyes tracking the movement of the creature as Shanvika keeps talking. Harry shrugs one shoulder, listening intently to the chatter on the other end of the phone. “How do you know it’s a girl?” Draco interrupts, curious. “Okay, Shanvika, sorry, she’s like an iridescent purple– ish–” Harry snorts, but covers it with a hand as he brings his mobile back to his ear. They had closed the door to the storage room as soon as they discovered the creature was in there, hoping that there wouldn’t be any damage to the front of the store, but even thinking about the clean-up in this room alone is enough to exhaust them. There’s a rough cloth covering its eyes, which seems to be the source of its panic, but Draco’s afraid to approach it. Every few seconds it goes completely invisible, then pops back into existence. It’s a curious thing, sinuous as a snake with no visible limbs, shimmering an impossible purple-blue all the way up to its curled horns. “Invisible,” Draco deadpans, watching the creature slink between a few boxes before sending them toppling. “Draco, what color would you say she is?” “No, it’s not red, it’s… uh.” Harry brings his mobile away from his ear, listening intently to someone who Draco has gathered is a coworker of Harry’s named Shanvika. ![]() It’s not Harry’s fault that he’s the one who showed up, looking deliciously disheveled in Vans and cargo trousers, claiming that he was the answer to Draco’s panicked call to Magical Creature Services. If anyone is to blame, it’s the serpent-like creature currently flashing in and out of existence and wreaking general havoc in the back room of Draco’s record shop. Draco wants to blame Harry for this mess, but unfortunately even they can see it isn’t Harry’s fault, not really. ![]()
